Reducing the Time, Cost, and Complexity of Delivering Office 2007

Upgrading to Microsoft Office 2007TM offers tremendous business benefits. However, several challenges associated with the upgrade may prevent some organizations from adopting Office 2007 as quickly as they would like. These challenges include:

  • Legacy client hardware. Devices that cannot run Windows or lack sufficient resources (i.e., memory, CPU, or disk space) can prevent Office 2007 rollouts from proceeding.
  • Cost and effort. Rolling out Office 2007 may require regression testing of other applications on the devices where Office will be used.
  • User training. Office 2007 offers a brand-new “ribbon” user interface that requires time to learn.  Not all users will feel comfortable moving to Office 2007 at the same time and pace.
  • Support for legacy Office files. Legacy versions of Office may need to be maintained after a migration to Office 2007, such as older Access databases or Excel spreadsheets. When Office 2007 is installed on a user’s device, however, it is not always possible for both versions to coexist.
  • Security and redundancy. Securing and backing up the intellectual property in Office 2007 files can be challenging with remote, nomadic, or non-employee users.  For example, it has been said that “Employees can buy a $25 USB drive and download $25 million worth of information 1.
