TechEdge 2009 Sessions at a Glance
Monday, May 4th - MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada
Session Descriptions
End-to-end virtualization with Citrix Delivery Center
Citrix Delivery Center is the only end-to-end solution for virtualizing both the desktop and the datacenter. This session will describe how the complete Citrix Delivery Center portfolio securely delivers virtual desktops and applications to local and remote devices while virtualizing and consolidating servers. Citrix NetScaler and Citrix Access Gateway, Enterprise Edition provide highly available and secure access; Citrix Provisioning Server quickly delivers server workloads and desktop images; Citrix XenApp and Citrix XenDesktop deliver applications and desktops; and Citrix XenServer hosts virtual machines.
In this session you will learn how to utilize the entire Citrix Delivery Center to:
- Provide available and secure access to desktops and applications using NetScaler and Access Gateway, Enterprise Edition
- Provision workloads with flexibility using Provisioning Server and XenServer
- Provide users a robust and consistent desktop experience with XenDesktop and XenApp
Technical level: Intermediate
Presenter(s): Jamie Baker, Keith McLaughlin, Nelson Esteves, Don Williams, Jacob Salassi, Jerome Reid and Kapildev Ramlal
XenDesktop 3 Architecture and Design
The new Citrix XenDesktop 3 release adds greater stability and new features, keeping this product on the leading edge of virtualized desktop delivery. This session will cover the architecture and design of XenDesktop 3, focusing on HDX technology new to this release. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe a number of new tools and technologies that improve the performance and reliability of XenDesktop.
In this session you will learn:
- How to implement XenDesktop hosting infrastructure failover with multiple XenServer pools and pool masters
- How to implement USB redirection
- About product-specific troubleshooting tools for identifying and resolving common problems
Technical level: Intermediate
Presenter: Jamie Baker, Sr Escalation Engineer
Planning and implementing a Provisioning Server high availability (HA) solution
High availability (HA) provides failover functionality to Provisioning Server. Multiple Provisioning Servers are configured to allow target devices to fail over to another Provisioning Server in the farm in the event of an interruption. When configured correctly, the failover will have little to no impact on the end user.
HA implementation requires careful planning by the administrator, including consideration of storage configuration, network design, and server hardware.
In this session you will learn:
- Advanced design and architecture of the Provisioning Server HA solution
- Advanced troubleshooting methods
- Common issues and best practices
Technical level: intermediate
Presenter: Keith McLaughlin, Escalation Engineer
Integrating and troubleshooting Citrix Access Gateway, Enterprise Edition
Citrix Access Gateway, Enterprise Edition integrates with Citrix XenApp to provide users a consistent desktop experience no matter what their location. Attendees will learn about the features of Access Gateway, Enterprise Edition, and how to optimize integration with XenApp, as well as Citrix Repeater (formerly WANScaler), to ensure high-performance application delivery to remote users. Various troubleshooting techniques will also be presented.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to integrate Citrix Repeater with Access Gateway, Enterprise Edition and XenApp
- How to integrate Microsoft SharePoint with an Access Gateway, Web Interface and XenApp environment
- How to troubleshoot and perform security checks with Access Gateway, Enterprise Edition and implement Smart Access functionality
Technical level: intermediate
Presenter(s): Nelson Esteves, AAG Escalation Engineer & Don Williams, Manager Technical Support III
Advanced troubleshooting of Citrix NetScaler
This session will review NetScaler troubleshooting techniques and various tools such as nstrace/nstcpdump, livehttpheaders and wireshark. We will review common scenarios encountered by administrators when load balancing Web Interface and XenApp servers with NetScaler. Attendees will gain an understanding of the best practices for troubleshooting these common issues, and will discuss the techniques used by Citrix Technical Support to resolve issues.
In this session, you will learn:
- Fundamentals of isolating and troubleshooting issues on Citrix NetScaler
- How to identify and solve problems with load-balanced Web Interface and XenApp servers utilizing Global Server Load Balancing and load-balancing
- Identify problems with load-balanced XenApp deployments including best practices.
Technical level: intermediate
Presenter(s): Jacob Salassi, Sr Escalation Engineer & Don Williams, Manager Technical Support III
Disaster recovery and automation with XenServer
As more organizations leverage Citrix XenServer to virtualize and consolidate production workloads in one datacenter, a solid disaster recovery strategy is more critical than ever. Also, as larger workloads run on XenServer, speed and consistency in performing manual management tasks can save valuable time in todays fast- paced IT environments. In this technical session we will explore the powerful backup tools provided by XenServer 5 and how to use the XenServer Command Line Interface for automating tasks.
In this session you will learn:
- How to use the different backup and restore mechanisms provided with XenServer 5, including VM metadata backup, XenServer host backup and database backup
- How to automate the different backup mechanisms using XenServer consoles and CLI scripting
- How to leverage the XenServer CLI for task automation via scripting
Technical level: intermediate
Presenter: Jerome Reid, Technical Support Manager
Troubleshooting tools and methodology for Citrix XenApp 5 environments
Because XenApp interacts with other applications and components, technically complex problems can arise depending on the health of these components. These can include connection failures, server hangs, CPU spikes and slow logons. This session will cover real-world issues and the methodology used by the Citrix Escalation Services Team to resolve them. It will also illustrate tools used to troubleshoot XenApp 5 environments, such as CDFControl, MedEvac, ProcessExplorer and WinDbg.
In this session, you will learn:
- About key components of the XenApp and XenDesktop logon process and typical issues encountered
- Which troubleshooting and debugging techniques the Citrix Escalation Team utilizes
- Best practices for using XenApp troubleshooting tools and debugging techniques
Technical level: intermediate
Presenter: Kapildev Ramlal, Sr Escalation Engineer
